In the Dolomite Alps during World War I, in order to overcome the natural obstacles impeding the passage, the Italian army equipped several routes with artificial elements (iron ladders, cables) allowing the troops to move faster on very steep terrain.

Today we call “vie ferrate”, iron trails, the itineraries that, based on that idea, allow even those without the technical skills of an accomplished climber to have the experience of progressing on a rock face in all safety.
